Was King John doomed to failure? Flashcards
Why was Bruce fighting for Edward at the Battle of Dunbar a problem for John?
This was a problem for John as it showed that some scots were siding with Edward and not supporting him, which undermined his authority.
Two of Edwards officials were presented at his inauguration, what does this suggest?
This suggests that there was pressure from Edward at the start and it can even be interpreted that he was exercising his authority over John already.
What did paying homage to Scotland mean for John in military terms and why was this a problem.
John had to do military service for Edward, yet he had no prior fighting experience.
Why was having a weaker army than Edward a problem for John?
He found it difficult to stand up to Edwards huge army, making resistance difficult.
How many parliaments did King John have and what does this mean for him?
King John had no fewer 4 parliaments in his reign and this shows power and authority, this suggests that if given the chance without the reign of Edward, John Balliol would of been a good King.
What did the extension of royal authority in the Western Highlands and Isles with three new sherrifdoms mean and why was this good for John?
The Western Highlands and Isles were rebellious and generally didn’t support John Balliol, therefore establishing three new sheriffdoms:
Alexander Macdougall, a Comyn ally, now sheriff of Lord
The Earl of Ross now sheriff of Skye
James the Steward now sheriff of Kintyre
Shows that he was trying to establish order in these parts of Scotland and prevent civil strife.
Why was using family connections a positive thing for John Balliol?
He used family connections to invite merchants from Picardy in France to Trade with Scotland - this was a good sign of strong leadership, someone who wanted to boost the economy of his Kingdom.
What was the significance of making the Earl of Carrick, the youngest Robert Bruce perform homage to him for his earldom?
This showed that, although Bruce may of lacked experience, with Comyn support, given the opportunity, King John might have been able to establish his dynasty. Yet Edward got in the way of this, ruining his reputation.
