He divided his forces into three brigades. One was commanded by Thomas Randolph earl of Moray, the second by Edward Bruce and the last by Bruce himself. He was able to trust his generals and they were loyal to him

Instead of staying in one place and being vulnerable to archers, he taught the schiltrons how to move in order to push back english cavalry. At bannockburn this meant the English knights were kept hemmed into a small area by the river and unable to use their powerful charge
