What is a viral induced wheeze?
Acute wheezy illness caused by a viral infection
What are the typical features of a viral induced wheeze that differentiae it form asthma?
- Presenting before 3 years of age
- No atopic history
- Only occurs during viral infections
How does a viral induced wheeze present?
Evidence of a viral illness (fever, cough and coryzal symptoms) for 1-2 days preceding the onset of:
• Shortness of breath
• Signs of respiratory distress
• Expiratory wheeze throughout the chest
What type of wheeze does viral induced wheeze present with?
Expiratory wheeze throughout the chest
Who does a viral induced wheeze typically affect?
Children under 3
What are the 2 most common viruses associated with viral induced wheeze?
RSV
Rhinovirus
What is the first line management of viral induced wheeze?
short acting beta 2 agonists (e.g. salbutamol)
Or
Anticholinergic via a spacer
What is the second line management of viral induced wheeze?
Intermittent leukotriene receptor antagonist (montelukast)
Intermittent inhaled corticosteroids
Or both
What is the management for viral induced wheeze the same as?
