Do inguinal hernias affect males or females more commonly?
Males
Why are inguinal hernias more common in males?
The testis migrates from its location on the posterior abdominal wall, down through the inguinal canal.
What can persist and be the site of developing hernias?
A patent processus vaginalis
Which children are at the highest risk of strangulaiton?
Children presenting in the first few months of life
What is the management of children presenting with a hernia in the first few months of life?
Urgent surgical reair
What is the management of children over 1 year old presenting?
Surgery can be performed electively- they are at less risk
What is the surgical management for paediatric hernias?
Herniotomy without implantation of mesh
Why are neonates and premature infants are kept in hospital overnight after a herniotomy?
They are at increased risk of post operative apnoea
How can paediatric hernias present?
Discomfort in the groin, especially when bending, coughing or lifting
Noticeable bulge in the stomach, scrotum or pubic bone
Pain in the groin region such as pressure or “heavy” feeling
Swelling in the testicles and vomiting
What is the 6/2 rule?
< 6 weeks old = correct within 2 days
< 6 months = correct within 2 weeks
< 6 years = correct within 2 months

Within 2 days
