What type of condition is Hypospadias?
Congenital abnormality of the penis
What is hypospadias?
Condition where the urethral meatus (the opening of the urethra) is abnormally displaced to the ventral side (underside) of the penis, towards the scrotum
How is hypospadias diagnosed?
Identified during examination of the new born
If missed, parents may notice an abnormal urine stream.
What are the features of hypospadias?
- a ventral urethral meatus
- a hooded prepuce
- chordee (ventral curvature of the penis) in more severe forms
- the urethral meatus opens distally
How might the urethral meatus be affected in more severe forms?
The urethral meatus may open more proximally in the more severe variants.
What is hypospadias associated with?
- Cryptorchidism (present in 10%)
* Inguinal hernia.
How does hypospadias most commonly occur?
As an isolated condition
What are possible complications of hypospadias?
- Difficulty directing urination
- Cosmetic and psychological concerns
- Sexual dysfunction
What is the management of hypospadias?
Corrective surgery
When is corrective surgery for hypospadias preformed?
When the child is 12 months
What should the parents of a child with hypospadias not do?
Circumcise the child
Why should a child with hypospadias not be circumcised?
Foreskin may be used in the corrective procedure
