Cerebral palsy Flashcards
What is cerebral palsy?
A disorder of movement and posture due to a non-progressive lesion of the motor pathways in the developing brain
What is cerebral palsy due to?
Permanent neurological problems resulting from damage to the brain around the time of birth.
What are the causes of cerebral palsy divided into?
Antenatal
Perinatal/ Intrapartum
Postnatal
What are the antenatal causes of cerebral palsy?
- Cerebral malformation
* Congenital infection: Rubella, toxoplasmosis,
What congenital infections can result in cerebral palsy?
Rubella
Toxoplasmosis,
What are the perinatal causes of cerebral palsy?
- Birth asphyxia
* Pre-term birth
What are the post natal causes of cerebral palsy?
- Meningitis
- Intraventricular haemorrhage
- Head injury
What are the least common causes of cerebral palsy?
Post natal
What are the different types of cerebral palsy?
Spastic
Dyskinetic
Ataxic
Mixed
What is spastic cerebral palsy?
Hypertonia (increased tone) and reduced function
Due to damage to upper motor neurones
What is dyskinetic cerebral palsy?
Oro-motor problems.
This is the result of damage to the basal ganglia. and substantia nigra
What is ataxic cerebral palsy?
Problems with coordinated movement
Due to damage to the cerebellum
What is mixed cerebral palsy?
A mix of spastic, dyskinetic and/or ataxic features
What is spastic cerebral palsy also known as?
Pyramidal cerebral palsy
What is dyskinetic cerebral palsy also known as?
Extrapyramidal cerebral palsy
