What makes a good doctor?

- Leadership: A doctor must show leadership when working with a multidisciplinary team and aare primarily responsible for a patient’s outcome. I believe I demonstrated this when my project was chosen by my school science department for us to present at an international science fair, where we had to deliver our presentation to a hall of international delegates and a panel of experts from across the world.
- Empathy: Doctors need to be able to understand a patients point of view, especially when helpng people at their most vulnerable. This is something I have been using a lot recently in my work as a personal assistant/support worker for a young man with autism. He has specific triggers which can cause him to become dysregulated and I need to be able to understand those triggers and try and keep him calm. When I have asked for feedback from his mother she has said that I have a good understanding of how he tends to function, and I know how to keep him calm.
- Resilience: Resilience is another key skill which I have developed through my 3 years of volunteer work with St. John Ambulance. I have dealt with many difficult patients (sometimes violent, intoxicated or aggressive) so I have an understanding of the daily challenges a doctor might face in that respect. After these patients it can be easy to feel defeatist about it, however I always do my best to come back the next time with a fresh mindset and never give up; difficult situations are a part of the profession and must be reflected on to progress.
- Communication: Communication is also vital, to be able to communicate with patients as well as with the MDT is necessary to ensure the best outcomes for the patient and to create the most cohesive team. Again through my work as a personal assistant I have had to adapt my communication to suit the needs of the client, something which is necessary for dealing with a wide variety of people in a career in healthcare.
