What are the factors affecting obesity rates?
- Diet: increased intake of ultra-processed, high calorie food. Decreased vegetable and fibre intake.
- Lifestyle: more sedentary, motorised transport, non-active hobbies
What are some biological causes of obesity?
- Polycystic ovary syndrome. Can cause abdominal weight gain.
- Cascade effect: 80% chance that the children of obese parents will be obese.
- Prader Willi Syndrome
How are obesity rates measured in children?
The National Child Measurement Programme began in 2006 and annually records the height and weight of children aged 4 - 5 and 10 - 11 years old in state schools in England.
How does economic inequity affect obesity prevalence?
- For children living in the most deprived areas, obesity prevalence was over twice as high compared with those living in the least deprived areas.
