When is an ADRT not valid in cases where life-sustaining treatment is required?
A
- The ADRT must be signed and countersigned by a witness.
- The patient must have had capacity.
- The patient must be over 18 years old.
- If a person is detained under the Mental Health Act 2005.
- The ADRT must include a statement that applies even if the patient’s life were to be at risk.
- Discuss with MDT if time allows.
- If uncertain, give life-sustaining treatment and document everything thoroughly in the event of legal challenge.
