Charlie Gard Flashcards

Q

Summarise the Charlie Gard case?

A
  • Charlie was born with a very rare genetic disorder: encephalomyopathic mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome.
  • His deteriorating condition meant GOSH doctors were no longer willing to deliver nuceloside treatment.
  • An American doctor offered to give him the treatment and his parents raised money for him to travel, however GOSH doctors appealed to the High Court requesting that they withdraw treatment and provide palliative care. Charlie’s parents opposed this plan.
  • Despite their appeals to the High Court and the ECHR, Charlie’s parents eventually withdrew their request to continue treatment.
