Why is empathy important for a doctor?
A
- Emphasised by HYMS on website and open day.
- Doctors must be able to empathise with patients and team members.
- Link to personal experience e.g Lilia and mental health and grandparents’ dementia.
- Link to NHS core values: compassion.
- 4 pillars of medical ethics: beneficence.
- My aim as a doctor would be to treat every patient as if they were a family member, because I have seen the positive effect that a kind doctor and a good listener can have.
