What are the three overarching aims of the NHS workforce long term plan?
- Train: increasing training and education to record levels, increase access by alternative routes e.g apprenticeship.
- Retain: improve support, leadership and flexibility.
- Reform: improve productivity by working and training in different ways to increase flexibility and provide support to where needs it most. Ensure staff are equipped to capitalise on new technology.
How will the number of GP training places change according to the NHS LTWP?
The number of GP training places will be increased by 50% to 6,000 by 2031/32. The number of GP specialty training places will be increased to 5,000 a year by 2027/28. The first 500 new places will be available from September 2025.
How will the number of medical school places change according to the NHS LTWP?
- Double the number of medical school training places, 15,000 a year by 2031/32, with more medical school places in areas with the greatest shortages.
- Increase the number of medical school places by a third, to 10,000 a year by 2028/29. The first new medical school places will be available from September 2025.

How will the use of apprenticeships change according to the NHS LTWP?
- Provide 22% of all training for clinical staff through apprenticeship routes by 2031/32, up from just 7% today.
- Introduce medical degree apprenticeships, with pilots running in 2024/25, so that by 2031/32, 2,000 medical students will train via this route.
