History of New South Wales
Australia’s first vinifera grapes were planted here by the British at the 1st permanent European Settlement outside of Sydney in 1788. Home to the oldest continuously run winery, Wyndam Estate, in Hunter Valley, est in 1828, also planted Australia’s 1st commercial Shiraz vineyard in 1930. Discovery of Gold in 1851 spurred viticulture

James Busby, returned to NSW after a trip to Europe with hundreds of vine cuttings from Spain and France including Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Rhone Varieties, and planted them in Hunter Valley and the Sydney Botanical Garden. D
Hunter Valley
Name of the Zone in NSW, containing the Hunter Region and it’s subregions Upper Hunter Valley, Broke Fordwich, and Pokolbin. Subtropical, humid, rainy. White grapes more common than red, surprisingly elegant, low-moderate abv wines considering the climate. Semillon, Chard, Verdelho, Shiraz
Hunter Valley Semillon
formerly sold as “Hunter Riesling.” the world’s most classic and ageworthy dry example of the grape. lower abv (10-12%) riping acidity, harvested early, sees no oak or lees stirring, is bottled quicky with a significant amount of CO2 remaining. Top bottlings include Tyrrell’s “Vat 1” and Brokenwood’s “ILR Reserve,” which are released five and six years after the vintage, respectively, both with stelvin closures
