Q

Chablis soils

A

Kimmeridgian Marl: crumbly, chalky marl (clay and limestone) and contains abundant Exogyra virgula fossils—the imprints of tiny oyster shells. More porous and mineral-rich than Portlandian soils. All the GCs and 1er crus planted on this soil.
Portlandian Limestone: a harder cap rock with less clay content, it is younger, formed 130 million years ago, and lacks th fossilized seashells. Portlandian soils, which overlay the limestone, are sandier and thinner than Kimmeridgian soils. Found on the ridges and plateaus surrounding the Serein river valley, often located on higher, colder and wind exposed areas, Petite Chablis AOP vineyards

120
Q

Aspersion

A

Aspersion: a greener alternantive to chaufferettes; vignerons spray vines with water, and hope to protect delicate spring buds in a cocoon of ice, which prevents the temperature inside from plummeting further. Difficulties include: water must be applied constantly once the temp dips below freezing, blocked/froaen pipes often an issue, the practice increases humidity and may cause frost to linger, wind hinders the ability to aplly water accurately.
