What is chloramphenicol OR (Chloromycetin)?
It is a medicine used for simple diarrhea and other mild illnesses. It is extremely risky and should only use for severe illnesses like typhoid. Don’t use on newborns.
What is oxytocin (pitocin), ergonovine(ergotrate), and misoprostol (cytotec)?
It is used to speed up childbirth or give strength to the mother in labor. It can kill the mother and the child and should only be used to control bleeding after the child is born.
What is true about injections of any medicine?
It is thought to be better than medicine taken by mouth. However, usually injected is more dangerous than taken by mouth. For example, injections given to children with mild polio can result in paralysis thus injections should be limited.
What is penicillin?
It works against certain infections and should not be used for sprains, bruises, or any pain or fever(also cold). If there is no breaking of skin, there is no risk for infection and should not be treated using antibiotics.
What are anabolic steroids (Nandrolone decanoate, Durabolin, Deca-Durabolin, Orabolin;
stanozolol, Cetabon; oxymetholone, Anapolon; ethylestrenol, Organaboral)?
Steroids made from male hormones and used in tonics to help children gain weight and grow. Can cause children to grow but maybe be shorter than expected.
Causes excessive hair growth in girls even after they stop taking the medicine.
What is Anti-diarrhea medicines with hydroxyquinolines (Clioquinol, di‑iodohydroxyquinoline, halquinol, broxyquinoline)
Clioquinols were used for treating diarrhea in the past and can cause permanent paralysis, blindness, and even death. This is banned in many countries.
What is gentamicin (garamycin) and kanamycin?
An antibiotic that Too much antibiotics used in babies can result in permanent hearing loss. Should only be used for life-threatening infections in babies. Infections in babies, use ampicillin works better and is less dangerous in babies.
What is cortisone and cortico-steroids (prednisolone, dexamethasone)?
A anti-inflammatory drug that was used for severe attacks of asthma, arthritis, or severe allergic reactions. Often used for minor aches and pains for quick results. However, they can lower a person’s defense against infection. Can make tuberculosis worse, cause stomach ulcers, and make bones weak.
What are arthritis medicine (buzatones, oxyphenbutazone, and phenylbutazone)?
Medicine for joint pain that can cause blood diseases. Can damage stomach, liver, and kidneys. An alternative is aspirin and ibuprofen are much better and cheaper. Acetaminophen can be used for fever and pain.
What are vitamin B12, liver extract, and other iron injections?
They do not help anemia or weakness except in rare cases and there are risks when injected (avoid injected iron like Inferon). Should only be used by specialist after blood is tested. Iron pills are better and safer for anemia
What is true about other vitamins?
Do not inject vitamins, get them from food.
What is true about combination medicines?
They are less effective and more expensive(do more harm than good).
What combination medicines should be avoided?
- Cough medicines that suppress coughs and get rid of mucus
- Antibiotics combined with anti diarrhea
- Antacids to treat stomach ulcers together than treat stomach cramps
- 2 or more pain medicines (aspirin with acetaminophen)
What is true about calcium?
Injecting calcium can be dangerous and can kill someone if not injected slowly. Injecting calcium in buttocks can cause abscesses or infections.
