Nudge Chapter 1 Flashcards
What does the table figure represent?
It represents bias where even if you see it, it shows that you still don’t believe it.
What is the concept of reactance?
It is the phenomenon when people feel ordered around, they might get mad and do the opposite of what is being ordered around(or suggested)
What is anchoring?
You start with an anchor (or also piece of information) and adjust in the direction you think is appropriate.
What is availability?
The assessing of likelihood of risks by asking how readily examples come to mind
What is an example availability?
Between if guns cause more homicides or suicides, people may be more inclined to say homocide because it is more reported in comparison to suicide.
What is an example of representativeness?
The idea that when asked to judge how likely something is to another, people answer by how much A is related to B according to their image/stereotypes
What is loss aversion?
The bias that people think that losses are more significant than gains even if they have equivalent gains
What is a status quo bias?
Following the same routine because that is what you are comfortable with or is acceptable and deviating from that is not good
What is framing?
The idea that choices depend on the way problems are described.
What are the two systems?
System 1 and 2 which are fast/intuitive and the other is slow and reflective. They are also known as the Automatic and Reflective System. The automatic is uncontrolled and the reflective is controlled.
What is the reflective system?
A more deliberate and self-conscious and works when asked complex questions
What is the automatic system?
The system that works faster and is similar to your gut reaction
What is the nudge used in the Chicago Rivers?
The added lines that are not speed bumps become closer when approaching the curve which causes drivers to slow down
What are the three concepts that make up heuristics?
anchoring, availability, and representativeness
In Nudge, there is the idea that humans don’t only rely on rationality but also on this, also known as a rule of thumb. What is this?
heuristics
