tum to tum- allows drainage of rest tract
warm environment >25 degrees
warm bowl and vigorous warming/drying/stimulating
allow to breath and cry
cover with warm towel and beanie
what are the benefits of skin to skin contact?
regulate breathing regulates heart rate temoreture stimulates digestion/feeding of baby improves protection from infection facilitates binding facilitates breast feeding
what are the behavioural changes post birth?
birth cry relaxation awakening crawling resting familirisation sucking sleeping
what is the initial managment of the chord?
allow chord to stop pulsating
no rush to clamp and cut
Mother may want chord attached - contact piper
what is the APGAR nemonic?
apperance pulse grimae actovity reparation
when is Apgar assessed?
assessed at 1 minute and 5 minutes repeated at 5/60 until score >7
what are the appearance points of the APGAR?
appearance - colour
0 cyanosed
1 partially pink
2 pink
what are the pulse (heart rate) points of the APGAR?
0 absent
1 <100 bpm
2 >200bpm
what are the grimace points of the APGAR?
response to stimulation

1 some respnse

what are the activity points of the APGAR?
muscle tone
limp

flexed arms and legs that rest at extension
