What is type 1
Autoimmune condition
Beta (insulin producing) cells attacked
Body can’t produce insulin
Exact cause poorly understood
Usually childhood but can develop any age
Sudden, rapid, onset of sytmptims
Insulin injections
What is type 2
Insulin resistance
Body can produce insulin but body is used to it
Typically adulthood
Gradual onset, worsening of symptoms
Lifestyle modifications- diet, exercise, weight management
What are the symptoms
Excessive thirst
Frequent urination
Unexplained weight loss
Increased hunger
Fatigue
Blurred vision
Irritability/ mood changes
Ketone production
Nausea and vomiting
Delayed wound healing
Diabetic Ketocaidosis
Life threatening complication
Type 1> type 2
Significant shortage of insulin
Build up of ketones and acid in the blood
Elevated blood sugar
Signs- sweet smelling breath]
If untreated coma, brain swelling, organ failure and death
What are macrovascular complications
Complications which affect large blood vessels (veins/arteries)
Atherosclerosis
What are micro vascular complications
Complications affect small blood vessels (capillaries)
Chronic hyperglycaemia
What are macro-micro vascular complications
Affects various parts of the body
Can lead to limb amputations
