Weberian Theory Flashcards
What are the three divisions Weber identifies?
Class, status, and party - these 3 cause inequality
What did Weber say of the class system?
It was fragmented - many layers
What was Weber the first theorist to do?
Consider purposeful human action
Which term did Weber coin?
Verstehen
What is ‘party’
Having a voice in society - not being marginalized, having access to political power (eg through MPs, labour unions). Lacking power may lead to social exclusion
What did Barron and Norris (weberians) theorise
Dual labour market - primary secure, secondary poor working conditions and insecure (link to Guy Standing’s precariat)
What did Rex and Tomlinson (weberians) theorise?
They identified an underclass of particularly marginalised groups - unable to access positions of power and status at work, leaving them vulnerable to falling to the bottom of the class structure where they experience poverty and disadvantage
What was Scott’s concept?
Social closure - how the elite maintain their status (through conspicuous consumption)
