The media moral panic about ‘black muggers’ was created as the bourgeoise needed a scapegoat - the moral panic justified intensive policing. As a result of labelling, Black men suffered marginalisation leading to more crime
What does Hall say ideological state apparatuses do?
Divide and distract the w/c, while justifying the use of repressive state apparatuses in case of civil unrest. both of these functions prevent revolution
What does Cohen say?
Skinhead subculture is a reaction to the decline of the working class community
What did Hebdige theorise?
Punks showed symbolic resistance to capitalism, youth are able to ‘see through’ the myth of meritocracy - however adds idea of incorporation which reduces the efficacy of the resistance
What does Brake say?
This resistance is ‘magical’ - they eventually conform and it has no real effect
