W2 mcferran: social influence on body type Flashcards
paper is about
effects of social influence and body type on the food choices of others
How do presence influences food consumption?
Anchors serve as reference points that are difficult for even experts to ignore, and they represent a relatively simple way to model consumers’ choices of how much to purchase or consume.
When a confederate sets up a norm, other participants tend to eat more (or less) as the confederate does: what happens most?
- Those who are naturally inclined to eat large portions eat less in the presence of others, and those who would normally eat very little end up eating more.
Study 1
Paritcipants had to watch a movie while eating healthy or unhealthy food. Next to them there was a confederate obese or thin
result
People eat less food in general if they are next to obese person
Of there is no one next to them they eat less
To understand what the reason is to eat less next to the obese
they want to distance themselves form unhealty person
- People try to differentiate from the confederate, this is very relative about what te confederate eats. It is really close but with the thin people it is more and with the obese it is less
Study 3
Want to investigate 2 factors
- Does the choice requires high or low cognitive load
- How self esteem influences choice
Want to investigate 2 factors
1. Does the choice requires high or low cognitive load
2. How self esteem influences choice
Exposed participants to confederates and to cognitive load.
result
- Low cognitive load
o Low self esteem eat less with obese person
o High self esteem no difference - High cognitive load
o Nothing changed, this shows that it influence requires cognitive effort
