Visual System Flashcards
Lecture 6 Module 2
What is the macula?
Central part of retina for central vision, includes fovea
Where do the muscles that move the eye attach?
The sclera
True/false there are lots of blood vessels at the macula?
False, so that it doesn’t distort vision
Which hemiretina is the optic disk in?
The nasal hemiretina
Which axons cross at the optic chiasm?
The axons from the nasal hemiretina
Where does the optic tract start?
After the optic chiasm
What is the retinotectal pathway?
To superior colliculus
What is the retinogeniculostriate pathway?
To V1
What percentage of axons go down the retinotectal pathway?
10%
What is the tectum?
The non-mammalian vertebrate version of the superior colliculus
What is the optic radiation?
Where axons go between LGN and V1
Where is V1?
The medial part of the occipital lobe along the calcarine fissure
What did Tootell et al. (1982) do?
Injected monkeys with radioactive dye while looking at pattern to show V1 is retinotopically mapped
What is the extrastriate cortex?
Cortical structures for visual processing that aren’t V1
What did Oliveri and Calvo (2003) do?
Tested phosphene threshold in people taking ecstasy, found have a more excitable V1
