Lecture 11 Flashcards
Decision Making
What is decision system 1?
The hot system, quick and based on emotion
What is decision system 2?
The cold system, slow and based on reason
What is temporal discounting?
The value of a reward is less the longer it takes to be received
What is the instantaneous energy intake point?
Point where energy intake = energy needed, is the best time to move to another patch
What part of the brain fires more the longer spent is a specific spot?
The anterior cingulate cortex
What is Kluver-Bucy syndrome?
Damage to amygdala, overeating, hypersexuality, hyperorality and lack of fear
Where does info go after the amygdala?
The ventromedial PFC and the ACC
What inputs into the amygdala?
The visual cortex, or if very scary info bypasses visual cortex and straight to amygdala
What part of the brain is activated when anticipating something?
Ventromedial PFC
What is Damasio’s somatic marker hypothesis?
Make decisions based on short and long term outcomes, if outcomes are uncertain base off emotions
Do people with ventromedial damage respond well to emotional stimuli?
Don’t respond as much to ‘scary’ stimuli, very little emotional response
What did Bechara et al. (1994;1999) do?
The Iowa gambling task, found people with VMPFC damage didn’t avoid the risky pile and less emotional response to risk
What are somatic markers?
Somatic responses linked to emotional responses e.g. sweating
What did Bechara et al. (2005) do?
Found had discrimination in the Iowa gambling task before conscious awareness.
Which way is the hot-cold gradient in the PFC?
Medial –> Lateral
