Cortical Vs. Subcortical Vision Flashcards
Lecture 8 Module 2
What did Goldberg and Wurtz (1972) do?
Single cell recordings in superficial layers of superior colliculus to determine receptive fields
What is the Sprague effect?
If cortical areas lesioned wont orient towards that side, but if damage opposite SC will orientate again
Why does the Sprague effect occur?
SC’s are inhibiting each other so when damage one get disinhibition
What did Schneider (1969) do?
Compared cortical and subcortical structure by looking at localisation (orientation) and discrimination (choose option)
What did Schneider (1969) find happens to localisation when removing parts of brain?
When remove cortex could still orient, when remove SC couldn’t orient
What did Schneider (1969) find happens to discrimination when removing parts of brain?
When remove cortex couldn’t pick right option, when removed SC still could
What is double dissociation?
When both factors change in both condition
What is perimetry testing?
Testing to see extent of visual field and any scotomas
What is contralateral hemianopia?
Unilateral damage to V1 so can’t see one hemifield
What did Weiskrantz (1986) do?
Asked participants to look to where thought light was (can’t see as in cortically blind hemifield), found blindsight
What is blindsight?
Can see but not conscious of it due to cortical damage
What did Rafal (1990) do?
Proved blindsight by getting participants to look at light in intact hemifield as quickly as can. Had distractor light in blind hemifield and took longer to look
