How does attention change perception?
Facilitates it if paying attention or impedes it if not paying attention
What is an overt change in attention?
Move eyes to look at thing you’re paying attention to
What is a covert change in attention?
Pay attention to something without moving eyes, attend in periphery
How does attention change ERPs?
When paying attention brain have a bigger response
What is an exogenous attention task?
Press button when asterisk in periphery appears and is either cued or not by box brightening
What is an endogenous attention task?
Press button when asterisk appears in periphery and is either cued by arrowheads or not
What is inhibition of return?
Method for effective searching, if have already looked somewhere don’t want to look again. Makes cued trials take longer is have delay
Is inhibition of return good or bad for driving?
Good
What is the flanker task?
Used to test how easily distracted, two stimuli appear and have to press button corresponding to one in center.
What are congruent trials on the flanker task?
Both stimuli are the same
What are incongruent trials on the flanker task?
The stimuli are different
What does a bigger flanker effect mean?
More easily distracted, slower on incongruent
How does old age effect the flanker task?
Get worse
