Subcortical Control Over Eye Movements Flashcards
Lecture 9 Module 2
What did Goldberg and Wurtz (1972) do the second time?
Looked at the response properties of deeper layers of the superior colliculi
What do the deeper layers of the superior colliculus do?
Fire at certain eye movements, have a movement field
What is an EMG?
Electromyography, measures electrical activity of muscles therefore movement
What is and EOG?
Electrooculography, records eye movements
What hemisphere would fire when eyes move towards the left side?
The right hemisphere (deep layers of SC)
What is a saccade?
A rapid eye movement
Which part of the superior colliculus does small eye movements?
Rostral part
Which part of the superior colliculus does big eye movements?
Caudal part
What type of neurons are in the superior colliculus (visual/motor)?
Some purely motor and some visuomotor (both)
What did Pierro and Deseilligny et al. (1991) do?
Looked at one woman with unilateral SC damage on the right, tested reflexive eye movements and she was slower moving contralaterally to damage
What is reflexive orientating?
See something in peripheral and turn towards so foveate
What are exogenous eye movements?
Reflexive eye movements
What are endogenous eye movements?
Voluntary eye movements
What are fixation cells?
Active when fixating on something, keep image fixed on fovea and steady
What is the opponent process to fixation?
Reflexive saccades
