Lecture 1 Flashcards
Intro Stuff
Are the cranial nerves PNS or CNS?
PNS except the optic nerve as the retina is part of the brain
How many spinal nerves do you have?
31 pairs
What are dermatomes?
Which part of the body each spinal nerve goes to
Where does information go into the spinal cord?
Dorsal root
What type of neurons go into the spinal cord?
Unipolar sensory neurons
What type of neurons go out of the spinal cord?
Multipolar motor neurons
What is the telencephalon?
The cerebrum
What makes up the forebrain?
The cerebrum and diencephalon
What makes up the diencephalon?
Thalamus, hypothalamus and epithalamus
What is the mesencephalon?
The midbrain
What makes up the metencephalon?
Pons and cerebellum
What is the myelencephalon?
Medulla
What makes up the hindbrain?
The metencephalon and the myelencephalon
What is the outer 2mm of the cerebrum?
Neocortex
What does Nissel stain stain?
Cell bodies
What does Golgi stain stain?
Whole cells, but only a few
What is the Hodgkin-Huxley cycle?
Membrane depolarised so channels open and let in Na which furthers depolarisation
What is myelin made out of?
Mix of fat and protein
What causes multiple sclerosis symptoms?
Demyelination so slow movements and cognitive impacts.
