Lecture 4 Flashcards
Visual Info?
Where does the ventral visual path go?
Inferotemporal (IT) cortex
Where are faces recognised?
IT cortex
What are gnostic cells?
Grandmother cells, only fire to a specific stimulus
What is the local coding theory?
Gnostic cells
What is wrong with the local coding theory?
- Need lots of cells
- Susceptible to damage
- How to perceive new objects
- Probability of finding right cell in study
- Can’t generalise
- No pattern completion
Why do we need to be able to finish patterns?
So can tell what an object is even if we can’t see the whole thing
What is Gestalt law of closure
Can see whole image even when not complete, e.g. WWF logo
What is pareidolia?
See faces and things in objects when they’re not actually there
Why do we need to be able to generalise visual stimuli?
So can tell an object is the same thing even when it is at different angles etc.
What is the dense/ensemble/distributed coding theory?
Each cell recognises a certain aspect of an object and the pattern is recognised
What did Quian et al. (2008) do?
First found Jennifer Anniston cells
What did Chang and Tsao (2017) do?
Looked at how people reacted to facial landmarks and recreated faces based on neural firing activity
