Methods in Cognitive Neuroscience Flashcards
Lecture 4 Module 2
What is cognitive neuroscience?
Looks at brain function on a thinking level and how that relates to behaviour
What is cognitive psychology?
Looks at complex mental processes e.g. perception and learning
Are EEG’s predictable?
Yes across individuals in the same state have similar EEGs
What can EEGs be used to detect?
Brain activity, including abnormal brain activity like seizures
Do you have to do lots of EEGs?
Yes to cancel out background noise or any mistakes
What are event related potentials (ERPs)?
Stereotyped EEG responses to a particular stimulus
What is latency?
Time taken from stimulus presentation to brain reacting
How is the spatial resolution of EEGs?
Bad as measured from scalp so hard to tell where signals are actually coming from
How is the temporal resolution of EEGs?
Good!
What are 3 structural imaging techniques?
CT, MRI and DTI
How does CT work?
Uses X-rays to see brain structure based on density. Has bad resolution
What does DTI show?
White matter tracts
What are 2 functional imaging techniques?
PET and fMRI
