Lecture 7 Flashcards
Time Perception
What is chronoception?
The subjective experience of time
How is chronoception tested?
Time estimation tasks - do something then asked how long it took
Time production tasks - do something for a certain period of time
How does THC effect chronoception?
Makes time feel longer than it actually is
How do life threatening situations effect chronoception?
Makes time feel slower
What is chronoSTASIS?
The halting of time perception
When can chronostasis occur?
When shift gaze too quickly for visual perception to keep up so looks like is frozen for a split second
How does the flash-lag illusion work?
Mind predicts where squares will be, so one looks bigger as is expanding
What is the Scalar expectancy theory?
Have an internal pace maker, get a time stamp every certain number of ticks of internal pace maker. Then memory compares event durations by how many time stamps has
What is ramping?
Cells fire faster or slower when closer to your goal
Is the hippocampus involved in time perception?
Yes, people with hippocampus damage have bad time perception
What did Sharot et al. (2007) do?
Looked at how well remembered 911 depending on distance from the event
Are adrenaline and cortisol good for memory?
Yes, in low doses if given straight after (no delay)
What hormones are released in the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis
Hypothalamus releases CRH, pituitary releases ACTH then the adrenal glands release adrenaline and cortisol
