What is syntax?
The small components of language need to be arranged in a certain way to make sense
True/false, language is bilateral?
False, it is lateralised. Is in the dominant hemisphere
What is the WADA test?
Anesthetise half of the brain, used to see that language is lateralised
What is prosody?
When the meaning of a statement changes depending on which part is stressed. Also deals with pitch, pauses and loudness. Allows us to link to emotional state
What is aphasia?
A language dysfunction
What percentage of strokes result in aphasia?
40%
What is Wernicke’s aphasia?
Problems with comprehension of words, fluent aphasia
What is transcortical sensory aphasia?
Damage between Wernicke’s area and processing areas, so problems with comprehension but intact repetition
What is transcortical motor aphasia?
Damage between processing areas and Broca’s area, can’t find words but intact repetition
What is conductive aphasia?
Damage to arcuate fasciculus (between Wernicke’s and Broca’s) so no repetition
What is Broca’s aphasia?
Can’t produce words, non-fluent aphasia
What is anomia?
Inability to name objects
What is agrammatical aphasia?
Can’t understand complex sentences even though know individual words
What is dyslexia?
Difficulty decoding printed words
What is apraxia?
Difficulty sequencing articulations (motor impairment)
