Viacom competencies Flashcards
Experienced research analyst ideally from a TV background - although candidates from other areas (e.g. media owners, TV ad sales, digital, media agencies) may be considered
I’m responsible for Freesat’s research activity, so i liaise across the business to establish those needs
Strong communication skills both in written and verbal communications
Being successful in my role requires command over a lot of voices in both the written and verbal forms suitable for a given audience
I write a lot of long form written documents for the board including the CEOs report and management information pack - i’ve also presented to the Board in person talking about some of our research activity
I create a lot of pitch packs for prospective content partners
I create regular reports covering the key findings from our BARB data and omnibus data
I’ve presented to externals including retail parters and our advertising agencies
I also run monthly Team Meeting and weekly stand ups for the whole company
Highly numerate with strong statistical experience
I’ve always enjoyed working with numbers - I’m a Chemistry graduate , so my time as a chemist gave me a good grounding in stats and means i’m very comfortable with numbers
I enjoy working with numbers and do a lot of analysis from data from our quant research, identifying trends
I do a lot of analysis on viewing figures/platform trends using data from BARB and TVBeat
A lot of this data feeds into our KPI tracking and monitoring our performance against targets for the review of the CEO and eventually the Board - so my being accurate here is very crucial
I’m very comfortable with number and enjoy the more number heavy part of my role
Highly proficient at analysing large datasets - with the ability to look beyond the numbers and transform data into measurable insight
Half year report - looked at BARB data from past 6 months to highlight what was important - things like how average viewing hours had changed in relation to last year, the performance of young kids channels, news channels
Infectious appetite for media and consumer insight
I think TV and media is general is such a great subject matter for insight and research
I really enjoy understanding how audiences interact with media and the key drivers to a given behaviour (BVOD/SVOD example)
Strong attention to detail
y
Ability to work with autonomy and take responsibility for you own workload
y - once im clear on what im required to do, my audience and my deadline i can get on with something
I keep a to do list split into regular and ad hoc tasks which i give my boss access to so he knows what up im up to if he needs to
and then we have a short catch up once a week to talk through any concerns
Detailed working knowledge of TV data systems (e.g. BARB, TechEdge), digital tracking software (e.g. Omniture, Comscore, Google Analytics) and social listening tools (e.g. Crims and Hexagons, Facebook/Youtube Analytics)
so i’m typically the first point of contact when anyone has any BARB queries internally - but with our team basically being an amalgamation of an audiences team, a research team, a strategy team - it makes more sense for us to use a data processing bureau which we do - but i’m heavily involved with specifying their reporting to us so i’m still very familiar with how BARB works and the definitions they use. So while i’m not familiar with TechEgde specifically, i’ve used TV analysis tool such as TVBeat with reports from our own connected devices base and i got to grips with this very quickly
I’ve used GA before to measure key metrics on our mobile app and on our website - i’m chiefly interested in engagement metrics such as average duration per session, web pages per session, number of mobile app launched etc
I haven’t used social listening tools but that’d something i’d be ery interested to learn more about and could get to grips with once i have an understanding of historical performance and benchmarks and competitor performances
Excellent Excel skills with work experience using excel to distill complex data sets into audience insights
Yes - i use it to perform analysis and also build forecasts and track key metrics
Detailed knowledge of UK Television and wider media marketplace and a strong interest in TV/digital entertainment platforms
Understanding the market is a big part of what i do for many audiences
I contribute a lot of material to the Board documents outlining key marketing trends and their impact on Freesat - whether thats changing consumer behaviours such as COVID or a new competitor product launching - often find themes that fit with Freesat’s narrative
I’ll also provide short summaries for the whole company for say a big VOD player launch - i’ll sometime do this in written form, or at our weekly stand ups, or i may even turn it into a quiz
Awareness of the UK affiliates market an advantage
nope
Experience of media ad sales or sponsorship functions
Not directly - being from the platform side means my exposure to the commercial aspect of TV is less direct and have thought of it as something which Freesat provides value to by delivering an audience
Experience in survey research (design, implementation) & focus group experience
Yes - i manage our ongoing quantitative research running regular tracking questions but also liaising across the business and turning pressing questions within the business into good quant survey questions to best provide actionable insight
I have some focus group experience in terms of writing discussion guides and sitting in on focus groups. I think the latter has made me very appreciative of the need for good moderation and the types of problems focus groups lend themselves to - i think they’re always so interesting in terms of the unexpected things they can sometimes throw up
Experience in using data visualization tools (e.g. Tableau)
We’ve been shopping around for BI tools so i’ve been able to have an overview of quite a few including Domo and Tableau - i’ve been recently getting to grips with Tableau and really like it, i find it pretty intuitive but still very powerful and something i’ve really love to delve further into, I’ve used Data Studio which is Google’s product which is ok and works in a similar way in terms of making linkages but i much preferred Tableau
This is an area i’m really interested in and have some experience in
