What is good about the BBC

A

Its wholly accountable to the public, and is world leading in fulfilling that agenda

No other service has the ability to reach audiences in the same way the BBC does - especially bringing together isolated audiences

The BBC has a long history of being a credible and trusted services, which COVID has renewed that status

Role had become so much more clear during crises - It is essential to informing the public, COVID proves this

What are the key trends in podcasting

A

Delivering on its promise many years ago, no longer a niche activity, base and engagement growing linearly

Much more important in audio space, Spotify acquisition of Gimlet cements their commitment to podcasting. They’re pouring resources into getting exclusive rights (Joe Rogan)

Brands have seen this growth and are investing in their own podcasts to tell stories to strengthen their brands

So much more content available, more competitive

Audience is very engaged, and young

Competing with online radio, music, even youtube

Audience is accepting of ads

Had plateaued, but increased during lockdown

A

Radio was fairly resilient during COVID, but faces an advertising downturn, exception of young people

Advertising way already down YoY, as seen in TV

Viewing shifted from out of home in in the home

Digital rad is accelerating vs analogue

A

IT fulfils the PSB agenda which reflects british values back to the public

A

Commands 6% of the market, outdone only by Spotify, Amazon, and YouTube

It allows for such a diverse range of voices, which the BBC has a commitment to fulfil

Competitors are global big tech companies who are great at reaching young audiences but struggle more with older ones - BBC audience is older and my providing parity with radio and podcasting worlds you can keep audience engaged but also introduce podcasting in a familiar environment

excels particularly in factual content

When it comes just to podcasting, Sounds performs as well as spotify et al

Hosted the most used COVID podcast in the form of Coronavirus global update

Launched education/exercise podcasts when they were needed most for parent and students, classic content from archive
