What is a Vehicular Pursuit?
Active attempt to stop a fleeing vehicle, who clearly exhibits a refusal to stop, or is avoiding apprehension through speed or evasive tactics. A pursuit maybe at any speed.
What is a High Speed Pursuit?
a pursuit in excess of 15 MPH over the posted speed limit.
What is a Roadblock?
physical blockage of the roadway of a fleeing vehicle by means of material, equipment or vehicles to forcibly stop the operator who is eluding the officer.
What is a Primary & Secondary Pursuit Vehicle?
Primary is the 1st police vehicle immediately behind the suspect vehicle. Secondary is the vehicle immediately behind the primary vehicle as support.
Support Vehicles are..?
any police vehicle, which responds to the area of the pursuit, but is not actively involved in the pursuit.
RIGL 31-12-6 “Emergency Vehicles-Times when entitled to special privileges” is?

A high speed pursuit or conditions of a high speed pursuit will be limited to those situations that involve:
the attempt to apprehend a person wanted for the commission of a felonious and/or misdemeanor act that threaten, have threatened, or will threaten the health, life, or safety of a person or persons. OR pursuit of a MV who committed MV violations that endangered lives and safety prior to the the pursuit and is continuing to operate in a reckless manner. (ie…DUI, but not limited to).
What are some of the considerations to take account of when deciding to initiate a pursuit?
Type of crime, if they can be apprehended later if ID’d, location of pursuit, time of day, road conditions, lighting, officers level of training/experience….
When pursuit initiated the primary pursuit officer will..?
As soon as practicle, notify dispatch and in turn will be required to give the attendant circumstances, reg data/description, location, speed and direction, # of occupants also. While at “regular intervals” update this or other pertinent info.
The secondary vehicle in a pursuit shall…
maintain a safe distance, but close enough to render assistance and shall assume responsibility of keeping disp/OIC/STS informed of attendant circumstances. Also will not pass unless Primary becomes disabled.
