Q

Describe Vealeys model

A
  1. The performer approaches a sporting situation with two things - their competitiveness and their trait confidence
  2. They will then assess the objective sporting situation
  3. A combination of these three factors will produce a level of state confidence - at this stage the performer will be drawing on past experiences
  4. Performance will occur
  5. If the performance is successful, trait, state, and competitive orientation will increase
  6. If they fail, trait, state, and competitive orientation will decrease

Q

Apply Vealey’s model to a sporting example

A

Rugby conversion:
- Trait = how confident the rugby player is in a range of sports
- Competitiveness = kicker is very motivated to succeed and has set himself performance goal of kicking 90% of his attempts
- OSS = taking a conversion in the 61 minute against NZ
- State = confident they will score the kick as they have many conversions before
- Performance = conversion is taken
- Outcome = successful kick was made meaning state/trait/competitiveness will increase - leading to increased goals like 95% kicking success
-> If outcome was negative then trait and state confidence/competitiveness would decrease

Q

Give 3 positives of having the home advantage

A
  • Leads to functional assertive behaviour - where the home team play with more drive
  • No fatigue from travelling can lead to a more energetic performance
  • Familiarisation of surroundings helps players to feel more comfortable with their environment = optimal arousal

Q

Give 3 negatives of having the home advantage

A
  • Increased pressure can cause the catastrophe effect and players suffer a dramatic reduction in performance
  • In large stadiums the crowd may be far away therefore the home support is ineffective
  • The more important the game, the less likely the home team is to win
