Vealeys model of sports confidence Flashcards
Define trait confidence
A belief in your ability to succeed in all sports
Define objective sporting situation
A combination of the skill being performed and the situation that one faces (e.g. tennis serve is semi final set 3)
Define competitive orientation
The level of competitiveness a performer has
Define state confidence
A belief in your ability in a specific sporting moment
Define performance
The execution of a skill - this is influenced by confidence
Define outcome/result
The subjective judgement of the athlete
What happens if the outcome is good?
Then trait confidence and competitive orientation increase
What happens if the outcome is bad?
Then trait confidence and competitive orientation decrease
Describe Vealeys model
- The performer approaches a sporting situation with two things - their competitiveness and their trait confidence
- They will then assess the objective sporting situation
- A combination of these three factors will produce a level of state confidence - at this stage the performer will be drawing on past experiences
- Performance will occur
- If the performance is successful, trait, state, and competitive orientation will increase
- If they fail, trait, state, and competitive orientation will decrease
What will continued failure lead to?
Learned helplessness and NAF behaviour
Apply Vealey’s model to a sporting example
Rugby conversion:
- Trait = how confident the rugby player is in a range of sports
- Competitiveness = kicker is very motivated to succeed and has set himself performance goal of kicking 90% of his attempts
- OSS = taking a conversion in the 61 minute against NZ
- State = confident they will score the kick as they have many conversions before
- Performance = conversion is taken
- Outcome = successful kick was made meaning state/trait/competitiveness will increase - leading to increased goals like 95% kicking success
-> If outcome was negative then trait and state confidence/competitiveness would decrease
Define home field advantage
A balance between confidence and anxiety (home crowd will increase confidence of home team and cause anxiety for away team)
Give an example of the home field advantage
London 2012 Olympics, when GB won their highest number of medals for years
Give 3 positives of having the home advantage
- Leads to functional assertive behaviour - where the home team play with more drive
- No fatigue from travelling can lead to a more energetic performance
- Familiarisation of surroundings helps players to feel more comfortable with their environment = optimal arousal
Give 3 negatives of having the home advantage
- Increased pressure can cause the catastrophe effect and players suffer a dramatic reduction in performance
- In large stadiums the crowd may be far away therefore the home support is ineffective
- The more important the game, the less likely the home team is to win
