Rewards that can be touched or held - physical
What are intangible rewards?
Non-physical rewards
Why is it important to keep performers motivated?
- Keep players on track
- Keeps them persistent and consistent in giving their best in every game
Give 4 characteristics of intrinsic motivation
- Comes from within
- Inner drive
- Participate for the ‘love’ of sport
- Self-satisfaction
Give an example of intrinsic motivation in a sporting situation
Learning to somersault on a trampoline for your own gratification
What is an advantage of intrinsic motivation
It maintains participation for a longer period of time
Where does extrinsic motivation come from?
Outside source such as a coach, other players or spectators
What are the two forms of extrinsic motivation
Tangible and intangible rewards
Why should coaches and players be careful to not place much emphasis on extrinsic rewards?
- Over-use may lead to loss in value or incentive
- Extrinsic motives can undermine the intrinsic reasons for competing
- If there is always a trophy/badge on offer, this might become the norm rather than exception
What are strategies a coach can use to maintain both types of motivation?
- Making the activity fun and enjoyable
- Point out role models
- Point out health benefits
- Using feedback to inspire and correct errors
