Group Productivity Flashcards
Briefly describe the Steiner model of Team Performance
- It states that it is not always the case of having the best players produces the best results, and they have to be moulded by the coach into a cohesive unit and maintain levels of motivation
What is Steiner’s equation?
Actual productivity = Potential productivity - losses due to faulty group processes
What is the actual productivity?
The performance at any given time (due to successful interaction)
What is the potential productivity?
The maximum capability of the group when cohesiveness is strongest
Describe losses due to faulty group processes
Factors that go wrong in team performance which impede/prevent group cohesion
Give an example of actual productivity
A netball team reaching the semi-final of a cup competition
Give an example of potential productivity
The netball team could have won the cup competition
What are the two types of faulty group processes?
- Co-ordination problems
- Motivational problems
Give an example of faulty processes in the netball situation
The arousal and motivation levels of some team members were lower than expected and therefore the team did not reach/win the cup final
Name 2 motivational problems
- Social loafing
- Over/under-arousal
Name 3 coordination problems
- Ringelmann effect (as group size increases the individual contribution decreases)
- Team members failing to understand their roles
- Team members failing to communicate efficiently with each other
What is social loafing?
When a performer lowers the level of effort they contribute to the team because they believe that their input is unnoticed.
Give 4 causes of social loafing
- Low fitness levels
- Lack of confidence
- Incorrect goals set
- Not understanding their roles
What is the Ringelmann effect?
When group performance decreases with group size.
State 3 causes of the ringelmann effect
- Lack of coordination
- Lack of motivation
- Less likely to receive recognition in larger groups
