Anxiety measures (2) Flashcards
Define a questionnaire
A series of questions used to assess the levels of anxiety experienced by a performer.
Give an example of a questionnaire
SCAT (Sport competition anxiety test)
Give 2 advantages of questionnaires
- Quick cheap and efficient
- Results can easily be evaluated and compared
Give 2 disadvantages of questionnaires
- Participants may not understand the question being asked
- Answers will depend on the mood state of the participant - and therefore may not be reliable
Describe the SCAT questionnaire
- Consists of 15 statements
- Should be completed an hour prior to an event
- Coach can see how players may behave in competitive situations and therefore can respond accordingly
- The higher the score, the higher the competitive anxiety
Name 2 advantages of observations
- Offers a real life method in the most relevant environment
- Better validity of results if the coach knows the players and their behaviours
Define observations
Involve watching a performer during competition to assess signs of anxiety evident in their performance
Name 2 disadvantages of observations
- Very subjective - depends on the observer
- Time consuming
Define physiological measures
Monitor symptoms of somatic anxiety including increased heart rate, sweating, and secretion of adrenaline/hormones - using specialist equipment
Name 2 advantages of physiological measures
- Objective data - factually correct
- Data is collected immediately due to advances in technology
Name 2 disadvantages of physiological measures
- Coaches will need training on how to use equipment properly - if not then results may be impacted
- Specialist equipment may restrict the performer movements - impacting performance
Define validity
Is the test measuring what is should be measuring?
Define reliability
If the test were to be repeated, would the results be the same?
