Define cohesion
The tendency for individuals to work together to achieve their goals
What is task cohesion?
Individuals working together to achieve an end result
What is social cohesion?
Individuals relating to each other to interact in the group
What are the two key terms we should consider in cohesion
- Co-action
- Interaction
What is co-action?
Where you perform individually but your efforts contribute to a whole teams performance
Give an example of co-action in sport
In a rowing team, where all individuals must pull together.
Or in a 400m relay
What is interaction?
When a group works together to produce results
Give an example of an interactive sport

Give 2 characteristics of task cohesion
- Coordinated in a performance sense, which is vital in interactive sports
- May not socialise away from team
Give 2 characteristics of social cohesion
- Communicate and support each other both inside and outside the sporting arena
- Group members get along and feel attached to others (bonding)
Which, out of social and task cohesion, is more important?
- Social cohesion can have a negative influence on the group as it can lead to formation of cliques
- Without task cohesion results would be poor

Why should both task and social cohesion be used?
Social helps the team to be interactive whereas task provides motivation towards a goal
