Define anxiety
A level of nerves and irrational thinking
Define competitive trait anxiety
A disposition to suffer from nervousness in most sporting situations.

A nervous response to specific sporting situations

- Can be innate
- Displayed before all events/competitions regardless of importance
- Not controllable

- Temporary
- Response to a particular moment or situation in a game (e.g. short corner in hockey)
- Controllable (practice situation)
What is the link between state and trait anxiety?
An individual with high trait anxiety is more likely to experience high state anxiety when faced with a stressful situation, especially if they feel like others are watching/evaluating performance

Psychological
- Self doubt
- Loss of concentration and decision making
- Occurs during or before performance
Is cognitive anxiety viewed as good or bad?
BAD!!! Should be eliminated to ensure high levels of performance
State 3 characteristics of somatic anxiety
Physiological
- Sweating
- Nausea
- Increased heart rate
Is somatic anxiety viewed as good or bad?
GOOD!! Up to a certain level
Name 5 causes of anxiety
- Importance of an event
- Fear of injury/losing
- Pressure from coaches/peers
- Effect of the crowd
- Evaluation apprehension (scared of what others think)
