Vasculitides Flashcards
What is the histologic characteristic of Buerger disease?
Polymorphonuclear infiltrates extending to neighboring veins and nerves. Inflammation of endothelium is associted with thrombosis and obliteration of the affected vessels.
What blood vessel is typically affected by Syphilitic aneurysm?
Ascending Aorta
Describe the pathogenesis of syphilitic aneurysm
Obliterative (causing or accompanied by closure or collapse of a lumen) End/Periarteritis of the Vaso Vasorum (inflammation of the lining of an artery) causes focal necrosis and scarring of the media, with disruption and disorganization of the elastic lamallae.
The inner surface of the affected aorta shows a typical “tree bark” appearance.
How does fibrinoid necrosis occur in Malignant HTN?
The disease injures endothelial cells, causing increased vascular permeability and an accumulation of plasma protiens into the vessel wall.
Onion Skin is associated with smooth muscle proliferationin what disease?
Polyarteritis Nodosa.
What is characteristic of fibrinoid necrosis in PAN?
The medial muscle and adjacent tissue are fused into an eosinophilic mass that stains for fibrin.
What are the three terms for vascular lesions confined to the skin that arise from Hypersensitivity angiitis?
Cutaneous Vasculitis
Cutaneous Necrotizing Venulitis
Leukocytoclasic Vasculitis
It is an inflammatory lesion
What characterizes Behcet disease?
Oral aphthous ulcers, genital ulceration, and ocular inflammation with occasional involvement of the nervous, GI, and cardiovascular system. It is a systemic vasculitis.
What causes a Hypersensitivity vasculitis that manifests as a purpura or skin rash in a patient with autoimmunde disease?
Deposition of immune complexes in dermal venules
What are Chilblains?
Itchy or tender red or purple bumps that occur as a reaction to cold
How is a kidney likely to appear in a patient with Scleroderma?
With marked vascular changes (mostly the interlobular arteries and affarent arterioles affected), focal hemorrhage, and cortical infarcts.
What’s the pathogenesis of renal vascular involvement in a patient with progressive systemic sclerosis?
Subintimal fibromuscular thickening
