Vasculitides Flashcards

1
Q

What is the histologic characteristic of Buerger disease?

A

Polymorphonuclear infiltrates extending to neighboring veins and nerves. Inflammation of endothelium is associted with thrombosis and obliteration of the affected vessels.

Q

Describe the pathogenesis of syphilitic aneurysm

A

Obliterative (causing or accompanied by closure or collapse of a lumen) End/Periarteritis of the Vaso Vasorum (inflammation of the lining of an artery) causes focal necrosis and scarring of the media, with disruption and disorganization of the elastic lamallae.

The inner surface of the affected aorta shows a typical “tree bark” appearance.

Q

How does fibrinoid necrosis occur in Malignant HTN?

A

The disease injures endothelial cells, causing increased vascular permeability and an accumulation of plasma protiens into the vessel wall.

Q

What is characteristic of fibrinoid necrosis in PAN?

A

The medial muscle and adjacent tissue are fused into an eosinophilic mass that stains for fibrin.

What characterizes Behcet disease?

A

Oral aphthous ulcers, genital ulceration, and ocular inflammation with occasional involvement of the nervous, GI, and cardiovascular system. It is a systemic vasculitis.
