Vascular: hypertension Flashcards
increased blood pressure involve what circulation systems
pulmonary or systolic circulation
what defines systemic HTN
pressure greater than equal to 140/90 mmHg
-divided into primary and secondary types
what is the most common type of HTN 95% of cases
primary
what are risk factors for primary HTN
age race - increase in african american, decreased in asians obesity stress lack of physical activity high salt diet
what is the etiology of primary htn
unknown
what is secondary htn
htn due to an identifiable etiology
what is an important cause of secondary htn
renal artery stenosis
the end result of renal artery stenosis is
- increased plasma renin and unilateral atrophy of affected kidney
what are important causes of stenosis
- atherosclerosis in elderly males
- fibromuscular dysplasia in young females
what is fibromuscular dysplasia
developmental defect in blood vessel wall
- resulting in irregular thickening of large- and medium- arteries
- especially renal artery
how else can htn be classified besides primary and secondary
benign and malignant
what is benign htn
mild or moderate elevation in blood pressure
how does benign htn clinically present
clinically silent
vessels and organs are damaged slowly over time
what is malignant htn
severe elevation in blood pressure 200/120
malignant htn may arise from
preexisting benign htn or de novo
