Vanadian chemistry Flashcards
What is vanadium?
= wide range of oxidation states and colours
What is the oxidation state odf V+2?
= +2
= violet
What is oxidation state and colour of V3+?
= +3 green
What is the oxidation state and colour of VO2+?
= +4 blue
What is oxidation state and colour of VO2+
= +5 yellow
How can vanadium be reduced?
= VO2+ ions can be reduced using zinc in acidic solution, all the way to V2+ ions
What is the first step?
= VO2 + is reduced to VO2+- this is a colour change of yellow to blue
= the zinc goes from Zn to Zn2+
What is the second step?
= VO2+ is reduced to V3+ and there is a colour change of blue to green
= once again Zn goes to Zn2+
What is the final step?
= V3+ is reduced to V2+ colour change of green to violet
What are the trends in oxidation state for transition metals?
= compounds with higher oxidation states tend to be oxidisng agents
What are the trends in reducing agent for transition metals?
= low oxidation states are more likley to be reducing agents
