recrystalisation Flashcards
hot an What is this?
= purify solids
= the solvent chosen is significant
What is the first step?
= minnimum volune/add just enough hot solvent to allow impure solid to dissolve this means you have a saturated solution of your impure product
= hot filter the solution through fulter paper quickly- remove insoliable impurities heat will prevent crystals from remforming during filtration
What is step 2?
= allow the solution to cool down slowly crystals will form
= insrting beaker into ice
= impurities will remain dissolved, in solution as smaller quantity, it takes longer to crystalis
What is step 3 ?
suction filtrate with a buchner flask and funnel to seperate crystals
What is step 4?
= wash crystals with dsitilled water t reove soluable impurities
= dry the crystals between asorobet paper
Importance of the solvent?
= impure solvent to dissolve fully in hot solvent but insoluable when its cold
= if not..
= substance wotn dissolve in hit solvent and you cant filter the purified solid if it is soluable in cold solvent
=
How can we detect impurities?
= measuring boiling points
= using distillation
= gently heat sample so we can see what temperature it dilutes and using the therometer,
= compare agaisnt values
= contains impurities if boiling point is higher than what is recorded in data book
= sample boils over a rane of temperature
Whay mayloose some yield?
= crystals lost when filterig or washing
= sme pridycts stay in soltion
= other side reactions happening
