Q

How does buffer solutions work?

A

= acid => conjugate base + H+ ions
= in buffers there is a much more higher concentration of salt than pure acid

Q

What happens if small amounts of acid are added to the buffer?

A

= equalibrian will shift to the left, to remove the H+ ions added
= as there is a large concentration of salt ion in the buffer, the ratio stays constant, PH stays constant

Q

What happens if small amounts of alkali are added to the buffer?

A

= OH- ions react with H+ ions to form water
= shift tothe rihgt producing more H+ ions
= some acid molecules are changed to ions salt as there is a large con centration of salt ion in the buffer HA/A- stays constant

Q

What happens if a small amount of alkali is added to the buffer ?

A

=moles of buffer acid would reduce by thenumber of moles of alkali added
= moles of salt would increase by moles by the same amount
