What are the core vaccines?
Tetanus
EEE/WEE
WNV
Rabies
Previously vaccinated horses are vaccinated for tetanus
annually
after penetrating injury or prior to surgery if last dose was over six months previously
If a horse is lacking vaccination history, it receives tetanus vaccination
in a 2-dose series
2nd dose 4-6 weeks after first
Previously vaccinated horses are vaccinated for EEE/WEE
annually
spring, prior to onset of vector season
If a horse is lacking vaccination history, it receives EEE / WEE vaccination
in a 2-dose series

consider 6 month revaccination interval for horses residing in endemic areas and immunocompromised horses

annually in the spring

Inactivated flavivirus chimera
all 2-dose vaccines
Special considerations for WNV vaccination
consider 6-month revaccination for horses who are
- residing in endemic areas
- juvenile (15yrs)
- immunocompromised
Broodmares receive core vaccine boosters
4-6 weeks pre-partum
Previously vaccinated horses are vaccinated for rabies
Annually
Broodmare considerations for rabies vaccination
May be given prior to breeding instead of 4-6 wks pre-partum
If a horse is lacking vaccination history, it receives rabies vaccination
In an annual single dose
Previously vaccinated horses are vaccinated for Anthrax
annually
If a horse is lacking vaccination history, it receives anthrax vaccination
in a 2-dose series,
2nd dose 3-4 weeks after first
Broodmare considerations for Anthrax vaccination
not recommended during gestation
Special considerations for Anthrax vaccination
Not to be administered with antibiotics
Previously vaccinated horses are vaccinated for botulism
Annually
If a horse is lacking vaccination history, it receives botulism vaccination
In a 3-dose series
every 4 weeks

Horses lacking vaccination history receive EHV vaccination

Vaccinated at 5, 7 and 9 months of gestation
