Gram positive or negative?
positive
Produces __ toxins

Type A location
Western US
Type C location
Mainly FL
Type B comes from
spoiled feed
Type C comes from
animal carcasses
Toxicoinfectious
ingestion of spores - toxins are formed in the GI tract
Most common form in foals
toxicoinfectious
Pathogenesis
toxin irreversibly binds to cholinergic nerve terminals
prevents release of acetylcholine in the neuromuscular junction
muscles can’t contract
flaccid paralysis
Clinical Signs (9)
- dysphagia (difficulty eating)
- flaccid paralysis
- decreased eyelid, tongue, tail tone
- sudden death
- muscle trembling
- recumbency
- diminished GI motility
- respiratory failure
- inability to swallow
Definitive diagnosis
mouse inoculation of serum or feed/hay extract
Treatment
anti-toxin administration
nursing care (fluids, turning, enema, urinary catheter)
respirator for foals
