Asymptomatic Bacteriuria
dx for Asymptomatic Bacteriuria
urine containing > 100,000 colonies per ml
treatment for Asymptomatic Bacteriuria
single dose OR 3/7/10 day treatment with antibiotics
-amoxicillin
- ampicillin
- cephalexin (Keflex)
- ciprofloxacin (Cipro)
- levofloxacin (Levaquin)
- nitrofurantoin (Macrodantin)
- trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim DS)
asymptomatic bacteriuria:
___ (often nitrofurantoin) each night at bedtime,
for the remainder of the pregnancy for women who have
persistent or frequent recurrences of bacteriuria
suppressive therapy
- S/Sx:
-dysuria - urgency & frequency of urination
- lower abdominal or suprapubic pain

Signs/Symptoms:
-fever
-shaking chills
- aching in the lumbar area of the back
-anorexia, nausea & vomiting also can be present
- one or both costovertebral angles usually tender to palpation

Gentamicin or aztreonam (Cayston, Azactam)
