What is the embryological origin of the kidney?
The mesoderm
What are the 3 successive systems of kidney origin?
Pronephros, Mesonephros, Metanephros
Which kidney mesodermal system remains as the collecting duct?
The ureteric bud of the mesonephric duct
Which system does the secretory portion of the kidney develop from?
Metanephros
Where does the bladder arise from?
Urogenital sinus (endoderm)
What part of the bladder is mesoderm derivative?
Trigone
Which kidney sits lower? Why?
The right, due to the liver
What is contained in the hilum of the kidney?
Renal vein, renal artery, ureter
What covers the kidney?
Thin fibrous capsule, peri-renal fat, extraperitoneal/para-renal fat
What are the posterior relations of the kidney?
4 muscles - diaphragm, quadratus lumborum, psoas major, and transversus abdominus
3 nerves - subcostal, iliohypogastric and ilioinguinal nerves
2 vessels - subcostal vein/artery
1 bone - 12th rib, (11th on the left too)
What does the medulla of the kidney contain?
Pyramids, columns
What do the apex of the kidney pyramids open into?
Minor calyces
What do minor calyces open into?
Major calyces
Where do major calyces drain?
Renal pelvis
What is the renal artery a branch of?
The abdominal aorta
