Skin Anatomy Flashcards
What is the largest organ in the body?
Skin
What are the functions of the skin?
Mechanical protection, Body temperature regulation, Vitamin D synthesis, Salt excretion, Non-specific immunity, Tactile sensation
What are the layers of the epidermis?
Stratum: Corneum, Lucidum, Granulosum, Spinosum, Basale
What cells produce pigments in the skin?
Melanocytes
What cells have are immune cells in the epidermis?
Langerhan’s cells
What types of sense receptors are in the epidermis?
Merkel Cells, Free nerve endings
Where is the epidermis thickest?
Soles and palms
What are the two layers of the dermis?
Papillary and reticular layer
What is the papillary layer of the dermis made of?
Loose CT w/ fibroblasts; collagen
What type of sensory receptors are in the dermis?
Meissner’s corpuscles (pressure) and Krause corpuscles (cold)
What is the deepest layer of skin?
Hypodermis/Subcutaneous layer
What type of receptor is in the hypodermis?
Pacinian corpuscles (vibration); Ruffini sensory corpuscles (joint proprioception)
What types of glands are sweat glands?
Eccrine or Apocrine
Eccrine glands are innervated by what?
Cholinergic nerves
What do eccrine glands produce?
Water and salts
What do eccrine glands try to regulate?
Temperature
What are apocrine nerves innervated by?
Adrenergic nerves
What do apocrine glands secrete?
Oily mixtures
Where are sebaceous glands?
Everywhere except thick skin in palms and soles
What are the most abundant locations of sebaceous glands?
Scalp and face
What type of glands are sebaceous glands?
Holocrine glands
